Utflykter – Skadar Lake
Skadar sjön är den största sjön på Balkan. Det ligger i Zeta-Shkoder Valley, på gränsen mellan Montenegro och Albanien. Dess yta, 6m över havet, kan variera mellan 370 km ² och 530 km, varav 2/3 är i Montenegro. Sjön är en krypto depression, fylls av Moraca River och dräneras i Adriatiska havet med 41km långa Bojana River, som bildar den internationella gränsen på den nedre halvan av dess längd. Det är den naturliga reserver av sällsynta fågelarter som hägrar, ankor, storkar, skarvar, och det är hem för några av de sista pelikaner i Europa! I 1996, av Ramsarkonventionen om våtmarker, det ingick i konventionens lista över våtmarker av internationell betydelse.
Skadar Lake waters belong to the second category, which means that throughout the year it is changed for 2-4 times.
Its maximum depth is 44m. It is the habitat of 270 bird species and 42 fish species. The Lake is most beautiful at the beginning of June, when lotus flowers cover its surface.
A scenic boat cruise on the Lake discovers numerous coves, islets and medieval monasteries, a landscape where the centuries blended with the Lake.
Lake’s sides are marshlands, covered by wide reed belt, and the surface of the lake is covered by exuberant marshland vegetation. In the shallows there are horses, pensive fishermen…
On Skadar Lake territory there are as many as 9 medieval monasteries, the oldest one dating back from the XIV century.
Skadar Lake islets are isles of monasteries and birds, a harmonious combination of history and nature.
The islet Grmozur – famous as Montenegrin “Alcatraz”
The fortress on the isle Grmozur was built by Turks in 1843. King Nikola I and his army conquered this island in 1876 and decided to build a prison on it. It was the first organized prison in the region which had its regulations. By these regulations, guards and other personnel had to be non-swimmers. Clause 11 says that in case that a prisoner manages to run away, the guard in charged for him would have to be imprisoned instead of a prisoner.
